What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammaplasty or breast enhancement, is a plastic surgery procedure that uses silicone or saline implants to increase breast size, improve shape and create better symmetry. It’s one of the most requested procedures at Amaira’s Fort Lauderdale, Delray Beach and West Palm Beach locations.

It’s a fit for women who have always wanted fuller breasts, and for those who’ve lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or aging. Every plan starts with your frame, including chest width, tissue thickness and skin quality, so your implants look proportional and natural.

If you have sagging as well as volume loss, your surgeon may recommend pairing augmentation with a breast lift.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

An informed decision is a confident one

What Should You Know Before Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most rewarding procedures we perform, and the happiest patients are the ones who go in fully informed. Here’s what we want every patient to know before surgery.

01

Implants aren’t lifetime devices

Many implants last well over a decade, but it’s wise to expect at least one more breast surgery in your lifetime, whether to replace an implant or update your look.

02

Silicone needs routine imaging

The FDA recommends an ultrasound or MRI 5–6 years after silicone implants are placed, then every 2–3 years, to check for silent rupture.

03

Mammograms are still safe

You can and should keep up with breast cancer screening. Let your imaging center know you have implants so they can take extra views.

04

Life changes can affect results

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and significant weight changes can change breast shape over time. Many patients plan surgery around family and fitness goals.

05

Know the rare risks

Like any surgery, augmentation carries risks such as capsular contracture, infection and changes in nipple sensation. Your surgeon will also discuss rarer concerns like BIA-ALCL and breast implant illness.

06

Implants aren’t lifetime devices

Stop smoking and nicotine before and after surgery, arrange a ride and help for the first few days, and plan about a week away from desk work.

IMPLANT OPTIONS

Your look, your feel

Breast Implant Types

During your consultation you’ll try on sizers and feel implant samples so you can choose with confidence. Amaira offers FDA-approved implants.

Silicone Breast Implants

Pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are less likely to ripple, which makes them a popular choice for slimmer patients. Gel options range from softer and more natural-moving to firmer and more shape-retaining. Approved for women 22 and older for cosmetic augmentation.

Silicone Breast Implants

A silicone shell filled with sterile salt water after placement, allowing a smaller incision. If a saline implant leaks, the body safely absorbs the fluid and the change is easy to see. Saline implants can feel slightly firmer and are approved for women 18 and older.

Breast Implant Incisions & Placement

Your surgeon will recommend the incision and implant placement that best fit your anatomy, implant choice and lifestyle.

Inframammary Incision

Hidden in the natural crease under the breast. Offers the most surgical control and is the most common approach.

Periareolar Incision

Placed along the lower edge of the areola, where the color change helps the scar blend in.

Submuscular Placement

Implant sits partly under the chest muscle for more coverage, a natural upper-breast slope and lower capsular contracture risk.

Subglandular Placement

Implant sits above the muscle, beneath breast tissue. Often a quicker recovery for patients with enough natural tissue.
