Step-by-step guide to layering your skincare: Lotions & Potions

Even when using the most effective products in your daily skincare routine, the order in which you apply each formula can affect their efficacy.

In order to get the most out of the products that you’re using and to avoid possible irritation or other unwanted reactions, it’s essential that your skincare routine follow a basic pattern. It may also be necessary to take into consideration which products are best used during the day and which should be reserved for nightly use.

For most people, a daily skincare routine will look like this:

For most people, a daily skincare routine will look like this:

1. Cleanser

First things first, your face should be clean and free of dirt, makeup, and other debris. This first step not only helps keep your pores clear—and, therefore, minimizes breakouts—but it also primes your skin for all the next steps to work most efficiently.

Talk to your trusted skincare professional to enlist their help in picking out the perfect cleanser. Some of you may have different ones for AM and PM. That is totally normal! You can’t go wrong with medical-grade skincare. Ensure you have a cleansing product that has the ingredients you need.

A silicone cleansing tool is my modality of choice when I recommend regimens to my patients.

2. Toner

Ah, toner. The discussion over whether this step is necessary has puzzled many skincare professionals.

Many people may skip this step, but, in truth, applying a customized toner before your moisturizer or night-time serums may help to soften and nourish the skin. In some instances, this step allows the skincare products used after this step to permeate into the skin even further.

Depending on your skin type and condition, there are a variety of toners formulated to help target specific skin concerns. Some will require the use of a cotton ball; others are sprayed topically on the skin.

Hello, less waste! This step should not be overlooked before talking to a skincare professional to see if you are a candidate.

3. Moisturizer

Each of these formulas utilize patented, state-of-the-art InterFuse™ technology to deliver key anti-aging ingredients deeper and faster.

If you use an anti-aging day cream, be sure to apply it only to clean, makeup-free skin. If you’re using multiple day creams, make sure you apply these in the proper order as well. Skinbetter science Intensive Treatment LINES and Daily Treatment Cream FACE, for example, can offer complementary results when used together, but LINES should always be applied before FACE. Each of these formulas utilize patented, state-of-the-art InterFuse™ technology to deliver key anti-aging ingredients deeper and faster.

Using this technology, Intensive Treatment LINES delivers high molecular weight, injectable-grade hyaluronic acid to re-volumize the appearance of skin. Four additional types of hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights then bind water to the surface of the skin to plump the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Once you’ve applied Intensive Treatment LINES, follow with Daily Treatment Cream FACE, which is formulated with a potent blend of messenger peptides to nourish five types of collagen. When applied together and in the correct order, these two anti-aging creams may act as a complete approach to collagen.

4. Sunscreen

Remember SPF is your BFF

Applying sunscreen every day as part of your regular skincare regimen is so important, especially for those concerned with lines, wrinkles, age spots, and uneven skin texture. Also, consider the fact that UV rays may lead to serious skin diseases, such as melanoma and other skin cancers.

Despite these known facts, however, many men and women still do not protect themselves from aging and damaging solar radiation by applying daily sunscreen.

To keep your skin adequately protected from the sun’s UV rays, not only is it important to use a daily sunscreen, but it should also be the last step in your skincare routine. Applying moisturizers or other ingredients on top of sunscreen may interfere with the way the ingredients are meant to protect your skin, and, therefore, may reduce its effectiveness.
