How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works

Facial lines can stem from various factors, extending beyond cellular changes, collagen reduction, and damage caused by environmental free radicals and sun exposure.

The repetitive contractions of facial muscles, such as frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows, contribute to the formation of furrows and folds in the skin, gradually leading to the development of facial lines. To address this, BOTOX® Cosmetic targets the underlying muscle activity, reducing it temporarily. By doing so, it effectively diminishes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines in adults, enhancing their overall appearance.

The Science

The Science

According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, Botox cosmetic injections are the most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. And, in recent years, there has been an increase in the use of Botox in the younger generation. In 2019, people ages 20 to 39 made up for 20% of all Botox procedures. Moreover, Botox can be injected in over 20 places in the face to result in a more youthful and refreshed appearance. These are some of the places and uses for Botox.

Botox injections for the forehead smooths the horizontal lines created from lifting the eyebrows. These “surprise lines” become more apparent with age due to repetitive movement. Over time, these lines become deeper and more pronounced even at rest. Botox injections work to relax the muscles that cause these wrinkles to form.

“Eleven lines” are the vertical creases in between your eyebrows that create a tired or angry look. When Botox is injected by an experienced injector, these frown lines can be subtly smoothed, which results in a more rejuvenated and relaxed appearance. If deep lines persist, a combination of dermal filler and Botox can smooth out lines even more.

Bunny lines are wrinkles created when contracting the nasalis muscle, like smelling, sniffing, or even smiling. Botox for bunny lines aims to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines that appear diagonally on both sides of your nose. The careful placement of Botox on both sides of the nose will reduce the appearance of the lines. The procedure is quick, and relatively painless.

Crow’s feet are wrinkles that appear around the eyes and become more pronounced when you smile or squint. These are often the first visible sign of aging. They radiate from the corners of the eyes and resemble the claws of a bird, hence the name “crow’s feet.” The skin is very fragile and delicate here, and we use the muscles that surround the eyes on a regular basis. Even young people develop crow’s feet. Because the skin is so thin here, it loses collagen faster than other parts of the face. Botox reduces the visibility of crow’s feet by relaxing muscles that surround the corners of the eyes.

As we age our brows tend to sag, resulting in a hooded look and droopy eyebrows. We can reverse this by elevating the height of your eyebrows with Botox injections. Botox can relax the underlying muscle to smooth your skin on the outside and relax the muscles between the brows. This allows the forehead muscles to pull up the now-relaxed muscles between the brows, thereby elevating the brows, opening up the eyes, and giving you a more defined brow bone. The difference is subtle but elegant and gives the appearance of a brow lift.

When contracted, the orbicularis oculi muscle is responsible for under eye wrinkles. When Botox is injected under the eye, it minimizes the contraction of the orbicularis oculi, which decreases the wrinkles created when smiling.

A gummy smile is when one smiles and the lip rests high on the gums. It is common for one to have a gummy smile due to long or enlarged gum tissue, excessive growth of the upper jaw, or the size and shape of the teeth. When Botox is injected, it can relax the muscles in the upper lip and limit the rise of the upper lip when smiling so that the gums remain covered.

Smokers’ lines are fine wrinkles and lines on the upper and/ or lower lip(s) that radiate out from the red lip border. Although they are referred to as “smokers lines” most individuals develop the lines for reasons other than smoking. Smoker’s lines worsen when the mouth is puckered by the contraction of the orbicularis oris muscle that surrounds the mouth like a purse string. The lines are a result of loss of volume as we age. Botox injections are placed in the area close to the red border (also known as the vermillion border) of the lip.

A lip flip is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that can help people achieve a fuller upper lip without dermal filler. Injecting Botox into your upper lip helps to relax the muscles and “flip” your lip upward, revealing a less gummy smile. This is a great approach if you don’t want dermal filler in your lips.

The depressor anguli oris muscle is a muscle that pulls the corners of the mouth downward into a frown. By placing Botox under the outer corners of the mouth, the opposite effect occurs, and the corners of the mouth naturally turn upwards.

The wrinkles in your chin are typically known as dynamic wrinkles because they are caused by your muscles making the same movements over and over. Dimpling, wrinkling, or an orange peel texture in the chin area is a part of the natural aging process. Botox can be used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles in your chin when injected in the underneath layers of your skin.

Aging disrupts the definition and shape of your normally straight and defined jaw line. As we loose collagen and the elasticity of our face falls, we gain excess skin and have volume loss in the chin and jowl area. With specifically placed Botox, we can treat this loose and excess skin. Botox is used to relax the muscles specific to making the shape of the jawline by lifting and tightening.

Clenching and grinding your teeth often leads to jaw pain, headaches, TMJ, and an enlargement of the masseter muscle. An injection of Botox specifically placed into the masseter muscle, helps to relax the muscle and limit movement. Furthermore, by injecting Botox into the masseter muscle leads to a slimmer appearance in the jaw line area due to atrophy. After this treatment, you are still able to chew, move your jaw, and make facial movements.

The platysma muscle is the vertical extended bands on the neck. With age, thinning skin, and displacement of fat, the platysma muscle of the neck weakens, leaving a noticeable appearance of the bands. Injecting Botox directly into these bands temporarily paralyzes and relaxes the muscle, creating a smoother and more youthful appearance in the overlying skin. There is virtually no pain, no recovery, and no downtime.

FAQs

BOTOX Cosmetic is a prescription medication that has been approved by the FDA to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines in adults. It is the first and only treatment of its kind available.

Continuously raising your eyebrows, furrowing them, or squinting your eyes can cause unwanted wrinkles in certain areas, such as your forehead, between your brows, and around your eyes. BOTOX Cosmetic works by temporarily reducing the activity of the muscles underlying these areas, resulting in a smoother and more youthful-looking appearance.

Before the treatment, you will have a consultation with a qualified provider to assess whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. If you are deemed eligible, the provider will proceed with injecting BOTOX Cosmetic into the approved areas.

The treatment can be completed in as little as 10 minutes, and there is minimal downtime required afterward.

According to many reports, the BOTOX treatment is often associated with minimal discomfort, with the sensation being similar to a pinch during the injection process.

Results may start to become noticeable within 24 to 48 hours after the BOTOX treatment (full results may take several weeks). The effects typically last up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines.

Under the administration of a qualified provider, BOTOX Cosmetic produces predictable and subtle results. After the treatment, you should still look like yourself, only with fewer lines.

If you discontinue the treatment, your wrinkles are likely to return to their pre-treated appearance.

People of all genders, races, and ethnicities who are 18 years of age or older can undergo treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic. Whether or not you are a candidate for the procedure is determined not just by your age, but also by the severity of your lines and wrinkles. A variety of factors, such as genetics and sun exposure, can contribute to the development of lines, and the degree of their manifestation varies from person to person. It is recommended that you consult with a qualified provider to assess your eligibility for treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic.

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX Cosmetic, have previously experienced an allergic reaction, or have a skin infection at the planned injection site, it is advised that you avoid using the product. Prior to receiving treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic, inform your provider of any medical conditions you may have and medications you are currently taking, and discuss the potential risks associated with the procedure, some of which may be serious and pose a risk to your life. A complete list of potential risks and side effects can be found in the Important Safety Information below. The most commonly reported side effects include pain, redness, and/or bruising at the injection site, as well as headaches, eyelid and eyebrow drooping, eyelid swelling, cold or flu-like symptoms, and allergic reactions.

Due to the short recovery time, you can anticipate returning to your normal routine following the treatment. However, if you encounter any post-treatment symptoms, such as swelling or redness at the injection site, or have any questions regarding aftercare instructions, please consult with your healthcare provider.
